FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Please find answers to questions related to Superior Science summer camps in the following section.

If you cannot find your question, please feel free to contact the directors.

  • Age groups are divided based on the grade your child will be entering in September 2025.

    Sprockets: Grades 1 & 2
    Circuits: Grades 3 & 4
    Gizmos: Grades 5 & 6
    Gadgets: Grades 7 & 8

  • We encourage campers to remain in their age-appropriate group. Changes are assessed on a case-by-case basis. We suggest that your child only moves up or down an age group by one level.

Please contact the Superior Science Directors at supersci@lakeheadu.ca to discuss further.

  • At full capacity, we have a maximum of 25 campers per classroom. Each classroom will have at least two Program Instructors (LU students), one Junior Instructor (high school student) plus no fewer than two volunteers. As a result, our programs typically have a ratio of 1:4 or 1:5 depending on the age group. At Superior Science, we strive to maintain our staff-to-camper ratio at the lowest possible level.

  • Our staff members are Lakehead University undergraduate students, studying in STEM-related fields. This summer, we are thrilled to have instructors studying Biology, Chemistry, Anthropology, Civil Engineering, and more! We also have high school students with our team, working as Junior Instructors and many high school student volunteers.

Program Instructors undergo training in a variety of subject matters to ensure they are well-rounded educators and prepared for anything camp can bring. They are trained in Standard First Aid and CPR Level C (at minimum), High Five Child Development, Gender and Sexuality Diversity (Rainbow Collective), Working with Neurodivergent Children (Children’s Centre Thunder Bay), and more. Additionally, all staff have completed Police Record Checks (Vulnerable Sector).

  • Yes! This summer camp season, we are offering five different sets of programming.  We are offering: Coding and Tech Week, Girls Week, Innovation Week, Sports Science Week, and General STEM Week. All weeks are available for all age groups. Each type of program will have completely different activities from one another which means that your child will partake in new STEM activities each time they attend!

  • To protect the safety and privacy of our campers, this information is not made publicly available. Families will receive an information package upon registration that will detail drop-off and pick-up locations.

  • Every spring, our Program Instructors work hard to develop new and exciting content for our campers. Superior Science strives for a balance of all activities. We offer a mix of science and engineering activities, including dissections in our Biology lab, building challenges, coding and programming lessons and more!

Our Girls Week and General STEM Week camps offer activities in a wide variety of STEM topics including Animal and Plant Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Ecology, Kinesiology as well as Technology, Engineering, and activities that incorporate Math (counting, patterns etc.)!

Our Coding and Tech Week camp offers a more focused experience engaging with coding and technology.

New this year are our Sports Science and Innovation Week camps.

Our Sports Science Week camp offers a variety of STEM subjects with extra emphasis on kinesiology and biology related to sports, as well as plenty of active learning through games and sports.

Our Innovation Week camp aims to instill scientific imagination and creativity through engineering and technology based activities.

If you have specific questions as to what your child will be doing during camp, please don't hesitate to contact the Directors.

  • We offer a mix of indoor and outdoor activities! Many activities get campers learning outdoors, when we explore nature and earth science. At minimum, weather permitting, we go outside for 2 hours each day; at lunch (60 mins), as well as for our pick-up and drop-off (30 mins each). That being said, we also aim to have one of our daily activity blocks take place outside each day (90 mins).

  • At Superior Science, we keep all of our activities on campus - but we do learn and explore in a variety of different classrooms and labs. We may also visit one of the many outdoor spaces on campus, such as Lake Tamblyn, or even the Lakehead University Fieldhouse!
